apiz is known as the "Seafood Capital of the Philippines", where farming and fishing are the primary sources of income of the people. The combined natural bounty of land and sea are enough to sustain a vibrant food industry. Its primary agricultural raw products are rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, banana and cut flower. Apart from a surplus of agricultural products it generates every year, Capiz is also one of the country’s major suppliers of prawn and milk fish. Other agro-industrial harvests include blue marlin, squid, oysters, shrimp, seaweed, squid and angel wings. The rich fishing grounds attract investors to venture into prawn culture, prawn feed manufacture, seaweed farming and the distribution and processing of other marine products. Bulad (Dried Fish) Bulad or dried fish is a major product of the province of Capiz considering that it is blessed with miles and miles of rich coasts. There are several varieties of dried fishes that can be found in Capiz that makes it a captivating land for the middleman sellers of dried fish in Metro Manila. Sellers of dried fish earn a living simply by exporting these to other areas in the country as well as abroad. Ornaments Made from Capiz Shells Known as one of the most versatile and elegant decorating raw materials, the Capiz shells are very important part of the culture of the local Capiznon. It is bread and butter source for many locals who engage in developing all sorts of designs for use as ornamental decoration in houses. The Capiz shells when used as ornaments and decors turn simple living into elegant and cozy-looking environment. It is well known to be a good indoor as well as outdoor décor major raw material. The Capiz shell products are also very well recognized in the world market because Capiz is the only living paradise for the Capiz shells that can be found in their vast sea treasure chest. Popular Capiz Shell Finished Products Some popular Capiz shell chips decorating design include gift items, indoor decoration and outdoor decoration ornaments. FAZENDA DA ESPERANCA PRODUCT

Since the very beginning of its history, the young people at Fazenda da Esperança are not living from money of their parents, but from their own work. Every community is trying to establish working areas, which can provide the necessary income for the needs of the community. Once a month everybody would sit together to take a look at the accountability, how much did we spent for food, energy, water etc. and how much did we earn with our work. In this way they are learning about the value of their work and are becoming responsible for their lives.

Milk Products

Still during the first months of the mission in Masbate, we asked ourselves during breakfast, why we should drink powder milk having so many heads of cattle here. So we started to milk some of them, at from that time on, we always had fresh milk for our own consumption. Since we also offered milk to our visitors, more and more people were asking us to supply them also, and little by little we started to sell some liters to some friends. First in empty soft drink bottles, but soon we realized that we had to buy new plastic bottles, because milk is very easy to spoil. The sales were continuously increasing; a big boost was the idea to offer also flavored milk.

Today we are selling milk in bottles of one liter and 250ml, pure white milk, but also with choco, mango, strawberry, buko pandan, melon and ube flavor. We are supplying different outlets in Masbate City and a number of regular costumers. Some of them are even coming all the way to Fazenda to buy milk. 

Beside the milk, also mozzarella cheese, white cheese, butter, yoghurt and other dairy products are made at Fazenda.

In October 2010 we inaugurated a Dairy Coral at Fazenda Masbate, allowing us to produce the milk in a clean, well organized and proper place, using a milking machine. For the total area of the Coral is covered, now the milking can be done without hassle under whatever weather conditions.

Vegetable

Same as with the milk, we started to plant vegetable for our own consumption, but more and more people tasted it, and wanted to buy it. So we increased the area of our garden, and are now regularly selling vegetable.

Meat Products

Fazenda Naga is producing different Meat Products, using German technology, ingredients and flavoring, for from the beginning this production was supported with machines, materials and know-how by the Fazenda community in Germany, which has a well equipped Meat Processing Plant.

Rice

When we arrive at Fazenda Masbate, some 10ha of rice fields were already established. It took us a while to learn how to plant rice, but with the help of our friend Eng. Jonel Orteza from the Department of Agriculture in Masbate, little by little we could improve our productivity, we established more rice fields, irrigation dams, stock rooms, drying pavements, mechanical dryer and a rice mill. Today we have planted around 15ha of rice, mostly irrigated. We are trying to implement also organic farming technologies, like vermi composting.

For the boys at Fazenda, the work in the rice fields is a wonderful way of learning the value and the dignity of our work, many of them experience here for the first time the joy and peace after a hard day's work in the rice fields, planting or harvesting with the brothers – and also the sacredness of rice, staple food of all Filipinos, that is planted with so much sacrifices.

Bakery Products

Fazenda Masbate and Naga produce different Bakery Products, Cassava Cake, Cookies, Carrots Cake, Muffins etc. The sisters, especially Sr Saula are assisting with a lot of love and patience.

By air

The city is served by Masbate Airport that is located at the city proper. It is served by Zest Airways and South East Asian Airlines daily fromManila to Masbate vice versa. However, Cebu Pacific will be establishing flights to Masbate within this year due to increasing demand of tourism.

By Land

Masbate can be reached from Manila by land through South Road to the Port of Pilar and Bulan, Sorsogon. From there, fastcraft can take you for two hours and fifteen minutes or motorized boat for a three-hour ride t the Port of Masbate.

By sea

Masbate can also be reached through the sea on board in a luxury shipping lines from the Port of Manila.The 18-hour trip is best spent on the ship's bar or in its all night disco. Other sea trips is via Dalahican,Lucena.

CULTURE OF MASBATE

CULTURE 

More than half of the people of Masbate speak Masbateño a language that is closely related to Hiligaynon and Capiznon. However, in various municipalities of the island, various other languages are spoken. In the vicinity of the towns of Cataingan, Palanas, and Dimasalang, most residents speak Waray or Sinamarleyte. In Pio Corpuz the people speak Cebuano while in Placer and in the west coast along coast of Mandaon Hiligaynon is spoken. On Ticao and Burias, Bicol is spoken by the residents.

The province of Masbate is known as cattle country. The cattle breed found on the island was taken from herds in India that have flourished in the benign climate of the island. The province is the second largest supplier of cattle that is brought to Manila for slaughter. This industry has inspired the establishment of a 'Rodeo Filipino' on the third week of June. This festival features a week-long tournament of bull riding, cattle wrestling, lassoing, calf casting, post driving, carabao racing and a host of other ‘rodeo’ games. This unique observance is also accompanied by cattle raising contests, a trade fair and parades, much like the rodeos in the American West.

ECONOMY & MINING 

The Province of Masbate is classified as a first class province.

Masbate is endowed with rich natural resources. In line with its agriculture are other industries such as large farming, livestock and poultry raising. Along its coastal areas, fishing industry predominates. Agricultural lands are planted with rice, corn, rootcrops and coconut.

Masbate ranks second only to Bukidnon in raising cattle. Abouth 70% of these are sold to Metro Manila and other provinces in Luzon.Farming is the main source of livelihood. Copra is the leading product, followed by corn, rice and rootcrops. Fishing is a major industry along the coast.

The province is one of the richest in the country in terms of mineral resources that include gold, copper, silver, iron, manganese and chromite. A foreign-owned company, CGA mining limited, is operating a gold mine in Aroroy, Masbate. At least 4 million tons of ore per year are being processed by CGA. The mine has provided tax and fees to both local and national governments. With the millions of ore/rock being processed, after extracting the about 1% gold in the ore, millions of tons of tailings in the form of ground rocks or sediments and water plus some contaminants, are directed by the mine to her engineered tailings storage facility closed to mangrove and populated areas.

In case a strong earthquake of magnitude say 7.8 occur, there is no 100% assurance that the tailings storage facility embankment/dam of this mine in Aroroy can hold the millions tons of contaminated slurry . According to the designer, the embankment may suffer deformation during earthquake and it is not specified the extent of deformation. Deformation may result to escape of millions tons of contaminated sediments from this Dam.

Manufacturing firms are in the copra industry, handicrafts, furnituremaking and fish processing.

The province is surrounded with rich fishing areas where all kinds of commercial species of fish teemed in great abundance.

Rich minerals are found in the province. Masbate is described by geologists as a province sitting on a "pot of gold". Other minerals found in the area are manganese, copper, silver, iron, chromite, limestone, guano, and carbon.

Cottage industry is likewise another source of livelihood. They are: furniture and cabinet making, ceramics, garments, handicrafts and metalcrafts.

Note; the longest road in the philippines can only be found in San Pasual because in 50 years of constructing the road from San Pascual to claveria and the feather roads of barangays until now 20 percent only are finished.

Being an agricultural province, Masbate remains a net importer of consumer and industrial products. The supply of goods came from Metro Manila, Cebu, Panay and Bicol Provinces. Construction materials, particularly cement are sometimes sourced as a far as Iligan City in Mindanao.

To meet the needs of growth and expansion of the industries, the infrastructure in most part of the province is continually being upgraded. These include the road and its network, transportation, communication facilities, seaports, airport and other support services.

The road and road network, particularly in Mainland Masbate, has kept on improving annually. Road structure is mostly cemented and/or asphalted and timber bridges have been concreted.

As a result, transportation sector has been a growing industry. Aircon minibuses and jeepneys are regularly plying in the two road sections of Mainland Masbate, which made transportation available round-the-clock for the need of the people and industries.

Masbate is a tropical paradise for tourists and locals alike looking for scenic sunsets, tropical gardens, waterfalls, white sand beaches, and delicious food. An island-province, it is considered to be one of the hidden treasures of the Philippines because of its undisturbed natural reefs and reserves, not to mention that its central location makes the city a melting pot for culture, dialects and cuisine.

Delicious peanut brittle.

You can have your fill of fresh giant crabs, oysters, lobsters, and other seafood dishes in Masbate’s restaurants. It is also considered as the country’s “ranch capital” (the beef here is very tender, tasty and very filling), and has the best poultry meat. Hence, the island’s specialties, apart from seafood, are grilled horse’s meat, beef steak, and flavored fresh cow’s milk which can be bought from Facenda da Esperanza in Milagros. (Quick fact: it is a rehabilitation center and it is the locals who stay there who produce these products.)

On Fridays and Saturdays, there is a saud (flea market) where you can buy dried fish, rice, cheese (yes, Masbate makes their own version of mozzarella cheese!), homemade sausages, and vegetables. Merchants gather round the capitol and sell their wares to people from as far as the Bicol towns and even to foreigners.

Aside from seafood, horse’s meat and cheese, Masbate also has the famous native delicacies calledcarmelado and molido. Carmelado is Masbate’s version of the pastillas. It’s made of carabao’s milk and sugar and can be found outside the Masbate Port and in the saud, usually costing around P100 per pack of 30 pieces.

Molido, a Spanish word that means ground or milled, is a dessert made from sweet potato and/or pili nuts, although it is the sweet potato that is more common in the markets of Masbate. There's a variety of molido where it is sprinkled with coconut bits and crushed pili nuts that is more popular to locals and tourists looking for a sweet treat.

Molido is a definitely a winner; it is crumbly on the outside, soft on the inside and as cliché as this may sound, literally melts in your mouth. You can eat this dessert with the Masbate Buffalo arabica coffee. This yummy kamote candy which costs around P50 per pack of 30 pieces, can be found in the Ports of Masbate and the weekend flea markets.

Inside the cave are well-sealed human caskets carved out of solid wood believed to be 500 years old that still contain human remains. 

Mataba-Tinigban to Napayuan Iisland 
A five-kilometer stretch of glittering white sands. At Napayauan Island, the surrounding water is full of marine life. It is ideal for snorkel and scuba diving. 

Bat-ongan Caves

Found in this mole-like mountain, famous for its numerous chambers and beautiful rock formation towering at about 150 feet. The caves offer tourists a thrilling experience in steep rock-climbing up to the highest peak.

This beach is located in barangay San Isidro extending south to east from the barangay proper with an approximate and aggregate length of four (4) kilometers. Its fine and silvery white sand can easily accommodate over a thousand people. The bottom of the sea is clear and sandy extending some one hundred meters from the shoreline with a gradual (depth of 5 to 7 feet) during high tide. Further from the shoreline are beautiful and colorful coral reefs which are inhabited by a wide variety of fishes. The beach is lined by coconut trees. 

Catandayagan Falls
